The Moab area lies in the heart of the Colorado Plateau, which, because of its pristine environment and magnificent scenery, has long been thought a national treasure. The area is a geological wonder. From the shaded depths of thousand foot canyons to the snow capped peaks of 12,000 foot mountains, the landscape surrounding the town of Moab, Utah is a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by some of the most diverse terrain the world, Moab is a magnet for those that like to hike, bike, rock climb, raft, kayak, canoe, four wheel drive, sightsee, take photographs or participate in virtually any outdoor activity they can imagine.
Moab, the only Utah community located on the Colorado River, is nestled in a valley with scenic red rock cliffs on both sides. Moab is surrounded by an extremely rugged and beautiful desert terrain. The La Sal Mountains, just 18 miles to the east, reach elevations of over 12,000 feet. Mt. Peale, at nearly 13,000 feet, is the third-highest peak in Utah. Meadows, lakes and streams abound in the pine, spruce, fir and aspen forests. The lush mountain valleys and alpine beauty provide striking contrast to the panoramic view of the deserts and canyons below. This varied topography offers excellent and practically unlimited recreational opportunities throughout the year.

The Moab Music Festival was founded in 1992 by Michael Barrett and Leslie Tomkins, professional musicians based in New York who have a love for the red rock country of southeastern Utah. According to Michael, “Creating the Festival allows us to combine two of the major passions of our lives—our love of great music beautifully performed and the tremendous beauty of the Moab area.” The Festival is noted for its distinctive programming, unique among
Festivals. While classical chamber music remains the mainstay of the
Festival, other types of music – traditional folk music, jazz, vocal music, and the music of living composers—are also part of the repertoire.

During the Moab Music Festival in September, the Festival’s Education Outreach Program provides a special educational concert at each Grand County School (two elementary schools, one middle school, one high school). A group of the visiting musicians – including the Festival’s Music Director—perform works appropriate to the children and provide a tutorial about the music, instruments, and the process of becoming a musician.

The Education Outreach Program reaches each child in the Grand County School District. The main Festival “season” is a two-week period in early September embracing the Labor Day holiday. Up to a dozen concerts are scheduled in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues in Moab. Certainly the most spectacular of these venues is a grotto 30 miles down the Colorado River from Moab. Two special benefit concerts during the Season take patrons downriver by motorized boat to enjoy the stunning visual beauty and acoustical splendor of this site.

This regional museum tells the story of Moab and Grand County's past, from prehistoric and Ute Indian artifacts to the explorations of Spanish missionaries. Photos and artifacts show pioneer Moab life, much of which centered around ranching or mining. The museum also features an extensive rock and mineral display and massive bones from dinosaurs. Adults and children alike will love the museum's "hands on" policy with many of the displays.
